Watch Olivia Wilde Direct Herself in Her Vogue Cover Video

Olivia Wilde is our January cover star, and in a meta moment for the director of Booksmart and the forthcoming, hotly anticipated thriller Don’t Worry Darling, the actor-director did double duty in her Vogue cover video, playing the role of dreamy subject—wearing a shimmering Michael Kors Collection number—and a filmmaker calling the shots behind the camera. “At least I don’t have to answer four million questions,” Wilde quips in the Matthew Frost–directed short, a reference to Vogue’s 73 Questions franchise. But upon further examination, Wilde the cover star is unable to resist giving directors notes, cheekily creating a new vision for the shoot, with everything from avant-garde props to a necessary neon-lighting moment. Wilde even jokingly suggests someone “be on fire.” The upstart director already is.

In our January cover, Wilde discusses the challenges of shooting Don’t Worry Darling during the pandemic (“Every bone in my body knew we had to make it when we did—I couldn’t be deterred,” she says) and the rocky path for female directors in Hollywood. “It’s much harder for female directors to get a second film greenlit if your first one didn’t make $100 million,” Wilde says of Booksmart. Nevertheless, Don’t Worry Darling sparked an 18-way bidding war: “Booksmart hit a cultural artery,” Wilde told story author Alexandra Schwartz. “Even the studios were able to look beyond the financial success. There’s so much content now. Hitting a nerve is much harder.”
