Trader Joe’s Cheese Pastry Rolls – Review

If you read that title and came here to argue with me, I get it. It’s really hard to beat the wonder that is the frozen chocolate croissants at Trader Joe’s. They’re buttery! They’re filled with chocolate! They’re oh-so flaky! And many (myself included) say they’re the closest to true Parisian croissants to ever come out of the freezer. They’re great and I’m not here to knock them. I am here, however, to tell you that I love these brand-new Cheese Pastry Rolls even more. Hear me out.

Trader Joe’s Cheese Pastry Rolls, $4.79 for four

First of all, these are filled with cheese. And, in my book, cheese beats chocolate any day of the week. (I know that not all of you are going to agree with me here. That’s fine — I have more points!) They’re ridiculously tasty, which I will get to. They’re also super low-maintenance compared to the chocolate croissants. While the chocolate pastries have to proof on the counter for seven to nine hours (which requires foresight and planning the night before!), these can go right from the freezer to the oven. In fact, you don’t even have to preheat the oven! Just set the oven to 400 degrees, put the frozen pastries on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, and bake for 22 to 26 minutes.

I popped two into the oven, turned my coffee maker on, and hopped into the shower. By the time I got out, my kitchen smelled amazingly sweet and my breakfast was ready. (The serving size is one pastry, so I ate one and gave one to my husband on his way out the door.)

When I first opened the box, I was a little bummed by the size. As you can see above, they’re skinny — just an inch wide or so. But they plump up nicely (science is cool!). The pastry gets nice and brown, and the sweet cheese filling oozes out just a little bit, while still keeping plenty of cheese inside. The best way to explain these little guys is to tell you to imagine a cross between a cheese blintz and a croissant. I actually wished I had some blueberry compote to dip these into. They’re sweet yet a little savory, and a ridiculously indulgent way to start the day.

As I write this, I’m actually giddy for tomorrow. I can’t wait to wake up and bake up the last two … and then go buy more.
