My skin is combination, acne-prone, and generally pretty temperamental. At 26, I’ve been on two rounds of Accutane (isotretinoin), Spironolactone, a few antibiotics, and lots of prescription topicals. I’m leery to introduce too many actives into my routine at once for fear of an acne flare-up (which, as my fellow acne suffers know, can take weeks to resolve). I tend to err towards a “less is more” approach to my skincare routine to not aggravate any breakouts.
Hormonal breakouts are still the norm, often leaving dark spots in their wake. For me, vitamin C is a skincare ingredient I can’t live without—it brightens my complexion (including those pesky post-acne marks), evens out my skin tone, refines any texture, and best of all does not break me out.
Having tried vitamin C serums from nearly all the major brands (and loving some, while feeling indifferent towards others), the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic seems like the one to beat. But with a hefty price tag of $169 a bottle, I had to know whether or not it was worth it.
