The ex-girlfriend of Shia LaBeouf has addressed the sexual assault allegations made against the actor in a new interview.
Actress Margaret Qualley split from LaBeouf, 35, in January, weeks after singer FKA Twigs filed a lawsuit accusing the actor of sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress when they dated in 2018 and 2019. Qualley and the Transformers star then dated for a few months late last year.
“I believe her,” said the 26-year-old, who plays a character named Alex who suffers emotional abuse in the upcoming TV series Maid.
“Unfortunately, it’s so common. And it’s true that more than half of people experience some level of psychological threat within a relationship in their lifetime. I just did my best to read the script and experience Alex’s reality as much as possible within the scenes.”
This wasn’t the first time Qualley has shown her support for 33-year-old Twigs — real name Tahliah Barnett.
Back in February, the actress posted a photo of Twigs on the cover of Elle magazine — the same issue where the singer detailed the alleged abuse she experienced in her year-long relationship with LaBeouf.
“Thank you,” Qualley had captioned the post.
Harper’s Bazaar revisited the post in their interview with Qualley, asking the actress why she wanted to publicly show her support for Twigs.
“It was important to me for her to know that I believe her — and it’s as simple as that,” Qualley explained.
When the allegations made headlines in January 2020, LaBeouf issued a statement denying them.
In the statement, LaBeouf’s legal team said he “denies, generally and specifically, each and every allegation contained in [Barnett]’s Complaint, denies that [Barnett] has sustained any injury or loss by reason of any act or omission on the part of [LaBeouf], and denies that [Barnett] is entitled to any relief or damages whatsoever.”
