On April 29, Ralph Lauren will launch a 13-piece vintage capsule collection. While that’s exciting news in and of itself, there’s more: The collection has been entirely curated by Vogue and is a small-batch mix of vintage and upcycled patchwork pieces. It’s all in celebration of the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” the sequel of September’s part-one show, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”

Patchwork is a tenet of Ralph Lauren’s Americana-steeped design philosophy, and it also reflects what visitors will see when they first enter the exhibition. The show opens with a patchwork quilt from 1856, and it’s a representation of the diverse cultural fabric of American fashion that serves as an introduction to the impressive display of mens- and womenswear spanning American history from the 1940s to present day.

The Ralph Lauren vintage collection has two categories: first, a collection of 13 vintage garments Ralph Lauren dug out of its archive. The assortment includes classic Americana pieces from a vintage denim jacket to romantic floral maxidresses. Then there’s a special patchwork skirt, which has been minted as part of the cultural zeitgeist as it was sported by all-American actress Mischa Barton at the height of The O.C.’s fame in Teen Vogue’s September 2006 issue. Furthermore, you’ll find R.L. classics like a crisp, prep-style white blazer accented with gold hardware—a timeless outerwear piece that can be worn for years to come. And because all these pieces are vintage, there’s only one of each up for grabs.

Plus, there are two Polo Ralph Lauren dresses, not vintage per se but crafted with upcycled textiles (vintage scarves, vintage Ralph Lauren samples, and vintage print strike-offs) into lovely patchwork dresses—one of which was modeled by Eve Jobs in our May 2022 issue.

Here, Jobs illustrates the potential of the dress, which can be worn in a multitude of ways. Style it with a prim pair of leather loafers and chic tailoring, then top it off with a stylish summer chapeau, like a raffia topper.
