Oscars 2022: How the Haim Sisters Got Ready for Their First-Ever Ceremony

The Haim sisters are always in perfect harmony. This was demonstrated stunningly last night at the 2022 Oscars, where Alana, Este, and Danielle Haim attended their first-ever Academy Awards ceremony in a trio of looks that married earthy ’70s beauty with timelessly chic Louis Vuitton looks styled by Rebecca Grice.

It goes without saying that it was a day of revelry for the Haim girls as they got ready together at the West Hollywood Edition. Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, which marks Alana’s star-making turn as an actress, received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Score. As such, it was all about finding the right balance between the inherent glamour of the evening and the band’s natural ease. “The overall vision for the girls’ looks was effortless and cool,” says their makeup artist Edwin Sandoval, who worked in collaboration with hairstylist Mara Roszak. “It was important that they each shined individually, but also complemented each other.”

The standout elements of each of their bespoke hair and makeup looks was led by the details in their dresses. “Alana’s soft and ethereal eye brought out the gorgeous dimension of the beading on the dress,” says Sandoval of her ivory number with scalloped detail. Roszak also took cues from the gown. “It had a touch of a ’70s silhouette with a cool ease, inspiring the soft movement with the subtle bends adding edge,” she says. For Este, in her deep navy halter dress, it was all about an “edgy chocolate eye,” says Sandoval, worn with a classic blowout passed over with a flat iron for an ultra-sleek finish. Finally for Danielle, a lived-in tawny eye, brownish nude lip, and a smooth blowout enhanced with a little extra movement via hot rollers by Roszak was the strategy for her slinky black pleated dress.

For a flawless finish across the board, each of their complexions was prepped with a glow-inducing veil of Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream paired with Beautiful Skin Foundation, and lengths enhanced with RŌZ Santa Lucia styling oil to shiny, silky effect.

In Sandoval’s words, “The way they view beauty is such a breath of fresh air and always on the forefront—easy and effortless.” Here, the Haim sisters invite Vogue into their feel-good glam session as captured by photographer Grant Spanier on his iPhone.
