It’s Oscars season, baby! And as such, it’s time to catch up on all the movies you might have missed in the past year that Hollywood has deemed important. One of those movies is Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, a slow-burn Western-esque movie with incredible performances from Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
The film was nominated in multiple categories, and it actually got more nominations than any other film this year. Here are the 12 (!) categories it was nominated in:
- Best Picture
- Best Director
- Best Actor
- Best Actress
- Best Supporting Actor (Jesse and Kodi were both nominated in this category)
- Best Sound
- Best Original Score
- Best Adapted Screenplay
- Best Film Editing
- Best Cinematography
- Best Production Design
There are a lot of interesting takeaways for these nominations. All four of the film’s lead actors were nominated, which is super impressive, and Campion is the first female director to be nominated for Best Director twice. Good for her, but embarrassing for the Oscars that she’s the first woman to break that particular glass ceiling. And if you didn’t know this beforehand, Jesse and Kirsten are partners (they have two kids!), so it’s pretty cute that they were nominated in the same year for the same movie. Imagine having his and hers Academy Awards!
You’re probably thinking, Okay, if this movie is so great, where can I watch it? That’s a great question with a blessedly easy answer: Netflix. The movie is available to stream right this minute.
But the movie is also playing in theaters in certain cities. There are a lot of really beautiful landscapes in The Power of the Dog that would make it very worth seeing on a big screen. You can find showtimes here.
