How Hunter Schafer Got Her “Stormy Eye” and Glossy Wet Hair for the 2022 Oscars After-Party

Ever the dream muse and collaborator, Schafer was also on the same wavelength with hairstylist Rena Calhoun. The actress’s love of Japanese manga and anime served as a jumping off point for glossy, just-emerged-from-the-water hair—a look that was all over the fall 2022 runways. “This look was inspired by Hunter’s love of anime, where you often see interesting haircuts that have multiple lengths, such as long tendrils that cascade to add a dramatic effect,” explains Calhoun. “We wanted to give drama for this look, and her dress gave us room to explore.”

After giving Schafer’s wet hair a clean center part, the pro worked Virtue 6-in-1 Styling Paste through her lengths and used a dense boar bristle brush to brush the hair down to ultra-sleek effect. Then for a dose of high-gloss shine, Calhoun added a veil of Virtue Healing Oil all over the top before passing over the hair with a flat iron to achieve a “barely there” texture, one that was a bit softer as compared to the sleekness through the top, finished with a cocktail of Virtue Split End Serum and Healing Oil to get separation and definition. In simplest terms, Calhoun calls it a “fully fantasy moment.”

An Oscars 2022 after-party look worthy of the main event, Schafer managed to one-up herself from head to toe yet again. As fashion researcher Kim Russell, widely known as The Kimbino, put it on Instagram, “We are no longer in a famine of beauty!”
