Behind the lace, though (and there was a lot of it at Christian Dior, Ellie Saab, and Balmain), it was apparent as the shows progressed that designers were providing more than just commentary on current events—they were trying to reconcile the past, the present, and the future.

At Off-White’s Fall/Winter 2022 presentation, titled “Spaceship Earth”, models wore veiled headwear to mourn the death of Off-White founder and creative director Virgil Abloh in late 2021. It was no surprise to see the return of his most notable pieces, such as the “Little Black Dress,” which the brand reimagined in a sequin composition.

What stood out most was the flag emblazoned with the directive, “QUESTION EVERYTHING.” To some, this may seem like an eerie sentiment, we couldn’t help but see it as an encapsulation of Abloh’s contagious curiosity and unique sensibility, one that felt especially apt in the present moment.
