It’s been a busy week for the artist formerly known as Kanye West. (When is it not, really?) Following a typically protracted countdown, a press release this morning announced the latest drop from his ongoing partnership with Gap, this time with a slight twist: the collaboration now includes input from Balenciaga mastermind Demna Gvasalia, the creative force behind Ye’s latest stylistic transformation. Formally billed as “Yeezy Gap Engineered By Balenciaga”, the collection marks the culmination of Ye’s longstanding relationship with the similarly mononymous designer, who helped shape the look and feel of his pal’s elaborate Donda performances.
As far as aesthetic statements go, it’s a fairly dramatic one. Gone are the dusty hues that once defined Ye’s earlier designs, and in their place are shades of washed black and a matching denim set in stonewashed blue. The 8-piece capsule skews remarkably close to Ye’s own uniform as of late, and a series of images debuted in tandem with the drop (and spotlighted on Balenciaga’s Instagram) hints at even more to come.
But what should you actually buy? That depends. Looking for a freaky riff on Gap’s “TIMELESS AMERICAN ICONS”, per the release’s consistently hilarious all-caps parlance? (The double-layer logo hoodie and swishy jersey sweatpants are where we’d start.) Itching to dabble in full-on Ye cosplay? (The padded denim jacket and coordinating distressed jeans are calling your name.) No matter what you’re feeling most, prepare yourself accordingly: If prior items are any indication, sizing is bound to be a crapshoot. Best to make sure you’ve got your measurements down pat before impulse-buying the whole lot.
