Talk-show host and comedian Trevor Noah is taking the high road after Kanye West called him a racial slur in a since-deleted Instagram post, which resulted in the rapper being banned from the platform for 24 hours

Rather than be angered by the hate speech aimed at him, Noah was sympathetic about the situation West was in amid his divorce from Kim Kardashian. The Daily Show host even praised him, telling the rapper he was a massive fan since day one.

“There are few artists who have had more of an impact on me that you Ye,” Noah, who grew up in South Africa, began in his lengthy post. “You took samples and turned them into symphonies. You took your pain and through the wire turned it into performance perfection.

“I thought differently about how I spend my money because of you, I learned to protect my child-like creativity from grown thoughts because of you,” he continued. “You were a serious rapper who also knew not to take himself seriously. You effortlessly brought comedy into music and made us all smile while we rapped along.”

In his post, Noah said he doesn’t care about West’s political views or if he wanted to fight for his family — he is simply concerned that the rapper is headed down a dangerous path.

“You’re an indelible part of my life Ye. Which is why it breaks my heart to see you like this,” Noah wrote.

“I don’t care if you support Trump and I don’t care if you roast Pete. I do however care when I see you on a path that’s dangerously close to peril and pain. You have every right to fight for your family. But you have to know the difference between that and fighting your family.”

Noah then addressed the racial slur West used to refer to him.

“Don’t ever forget, the biggest trick racists ever played on black people was teaching us to strip each other of our blackness whenever we disagree. Tricking us into dividing ourselves up into splinters, so that we would never unite into a powerful rod,” he said. “Look after yourself my brother. Hopefully one day we’ll all be laughing about this.”

West delivered his hate speech on Instagram earlier this week when Noah expressed concern on his late-night show about West’s treatment of Kardashian since she began dating Davidson in October.

“What she’s going through is terrifying to watch, and it shines a spotlight on what so many women go through when they choose to leave [a relationship],” he continued. “You know, people always say that phrase to women. They go, ‘Why didn’t you leave?’ … Yeah. Because a lot of women realise when they do leave, the guy will get even crazier. And when I say ‘crazy,’ I don’t mean ‘mental health crazy’.

“What we’re seeing is one of the most powerful, one of the richest women in the world, unable to get her ex to stop texting her, to stop chasing after her, to stop harassing her,” he concluded. “Just think about that for a moment. Think about how powerful Kim Kardashian is, and she can’t get that to happen.”
