Sports pundit and presenter Alex, 37,  brought the sparkle in a high-neck bejewelled gown, which boasted a subtle off-the-shoulder element and glitzy long sleeves.

The former professional footballer was joined by colleagues and her fellow hosts for the evening – Gabby Logan, Gary Lineker and Clare Balding, the quartet plastering big smiles on their faces.

Emma Raducanu was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2021 after following her stunning US Open triumph.

The tennis player started the year as a virtual unknown and was the odds-on favourite for the BBC award ahead of her win.

Congrats! Emma Raducanu was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2021 after following her stunning US Open triumph

In September, she won the US Open, becoming the first British female winner of a grand slam tennis tournament since Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in 1977, but it was the manner of that victory which made her achievement all the more remarkable.

Raducanu, 19, gave a first glimpse of her potential at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth round before being forced to withdraw from her match against Aja Tomljanovic with breathing difficulties.

But no one predicted the fairytale of New York which was about to unfold as she became the first qualifier ever to win a grand slam – and did so without even dropping a set.
