3 Things That Kept Me Up After Watching Episode 3 of ‘The Kardashians’

Spread the love

We’ve arrived at the third episode of The Kardashians, and it’s a big one: “Live from New York,” which follows the family around New York City and Studio 8H on the day before Kim Kardashian’s SNL debut.

Of course, there are additional spicy storylines: Kim frets about her unresolved sex tape dilemma until Kanye comes to the rescue; Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian—the dynamic duo—exchange wisecracks while wandering upper Manhattan in search of the apartment building Kris occupied briefly in the late 1970s.

Throughout the episode, the family revels in the novelty of their surroundings (purchasing soft pretzels in front of Central Park), and what they’re there for (a live TV show, paging through their SNL scripts with flourish). At one point, Kris summarizes her memory-in-the-making: “My daughter is going to host the most iconic show in New York.”

Here are three things that kept me up after the show’s third episode.

When Kim Said “Bring the Cameras”

Kris and Khloe are hanging out in their hotel suite when family friend Shelli Azoff rings. Thanks to the Kardashian convention of picking up and immediately placing their calls on speakerphone, we’re privy to the conversation.

“Kim Kardashian West,” Shelli says, “Is requesting you to come into her room ASAP.”

“Can we bring cameras?” Kris asks, with an incomprehensible look in her eye.

This mention of cameras is both unnerving and intriguing. As viewers, we’d been immersed in the story. In the flow of an episode, it’s sometimes easy to forget that cameras mediate our TV experiences. It’s even easier to forget that the famous-for-documenting-everything Kardashians have decided exactly what we’ll see. Now, observing them in that deciding process feels incredibly intimate.

“Uh– hold on,” Shelli says. Then she calls out: “Cameras? Or no?”

From a distance, we can hear Kim: “Yeah. Bring the cameras.”

“Yes,” Shelli confirms. “Bring the cameras.”

“Let’s go,” Khloe says.

With that, Kris and Khloe are off, down the hall, to Kim’s room. Somehow, overhearing Kim’s yes vote on cameras has as much impact as the high-drama scene that unfolds next.

I’ve said it before: The Kardashians is a reality show about a reality show, and inclusion of this moment exposed the way the Kardashians communicate about its production in real-time. Thus, the so-called fourth wall was ruptured by a casual phone call, without Kris Jenner even looking at us; in fact, it ruptured without Kim even being in the room.

Kanye’s Computer Rescue

Once Kris, Khloe, and the cameras make it to Kim’s room, we immediately encounter Kanye. “I just traveled to get something for Kim,” Ye tells Kris, and he points to the sitting area in Kim’s suite. In a slightly comedic shot, Tracy Romulus, Shelli, Allison Slatter, and Khloe perch on the couch in a perfect row, while Kim—decked out in her neon-pink Balenciaga—sits across from them to make a tearful announcement: “Kanye flew home last night, and he came back this morning. I wanted to show you guys what he got me.”
