“Eyebrow growth serums contain ingredients like peptides, vitamins, conditioners and botanicals that support healthy hair follicle activity and soften and strengthen the brow hair themselves,” Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, tells Editorialist. He explains that “brow serums can help enhance growth of your normal brows, or improve growth of brows that have been over-plucked.” Now that thick brows are the look du jour, Zeichner is seeing more and more of his patients interested in growth serums.
Azi Sacks, an eyebrow expert based in New York, is in agreement, adding that these serums strengthen and increase the thickness of existing brow hairs, while encouraging new growth by stimulating hair follicles. “Brow serums moisturize the hair and skin underneath the brow to increase overall health in the specific area,” she says. “By doing this, it encourages new growth and less shedding.”
However, Dr. Zeichner says brow serums are considered cosmetic productions, meaning they don’t claim to change the structure or function of the skin. That doesn’t mean they won’t work though. “Many of the peptides they contain have been shown in the lab to actually stimulate hair follicle activity,” he explains. So a trusty growth serum may just be your ticket to fuller, healthier brows.
